Graduation… or was it Prom?

28 05 2009

The final month of my senior year was probably the busiest month of my entire educational career.  Between the National Honor Society induction ceremony, prom, and preparing for graduation, I had little room to sleep – let alone do anything else.  As May draws to a close, though, I find myself wondering what the “big finish” of high school really is.

I have always thought of it as being graduation.  After thirteen hard years of work, why shouldn’t it be?  But after living through my senior year, I’m starting to wonder…

Is the “big finish” of high school actually the prom?

Students – particularly girls – can spend hundreds of dollars on prom.  The clothes, the accessories, the prom bid itself – not to mention the “after-prom” activities and the pre-prom activities, which can range anywhere from a stop at a burger joint to a two-hour dinner at an upscale restaurant.

Do high schools sponsor “after-graduation” activities?  How many people spend upwards of $50 at a pre-graduation dinner?

For me, graduation will always be the big-bang ending, but I’ve never really been a typical student.  What part of high school do you think is the real “big finish”: graduation or prom?

September Wrap-Up

2 10 2008

Stats for September:

Top Post: The TECH Project: The Prom

Best Comment: Jaden’s.  In general.

Biggest Surprise: A lot of people found this blog when they Googled something related to “The Dew Breaker” by Edwidge Danticat.  Which may have something to do with the review I wrote of the collection of short stories.

I’ll be posting a little more later.  Check back soon.

The TECH Project: Homecoming

25 09 2008

Unfortunately for my male readers, this is not a blog about football.  This is a blog about dresses.

It’s that time of year when Homecoming rolls around.  Since I’m a senior in high school, it’s my last year for homecomings.  Not that I ever went to one, but the point remains.  So in honor of my last year of high school homecoming dances, I’m posting a blog about what the girls of The TECH Project might be inclined to wear to their homecoming dance.

(Faithful readers may notices a resemblance to a previous post.  It’s a fairly popular post.)

So we’ll start with Zoe.

A poofy dark purple dress that Zoe might like.  It’s strapless, which Zoe probably wouldn’t like, but that’s not to say her friends wouldn’t force her to wear it.  Regardless, she would probably be too distracted by the ruffles to care.

A strapless red ball gown that Maria might be induced to wear by Chloe and Juliet.  As you may have figured out, Zoe and Maria aren’t much for dressing up, and Juliet and Chloe are.  The only problem I have with this dress being Maria’s is the color, which is slightly too bright.  But it’s glittery.  And glitter makes up for weirdness.

A cute, knee-length yellow and black dress that Juliet would adore.  Unlike her friends, Juliet is in love with pretty things, and she would probably also buy the black stiletto heels that the model is wearing.  I kind of like this dress because of the black lace on the bodice.

A short, knee-length white homecoming dress.  Definitely Chloe’s.  Apart from the color, the bow on the front is something she’d like.  Chloe is a lot like Juliet in that she loves to look cute and pretty, especially when dressing up for dances.  I actually have the sneaking suspicion that Chloe would wear matching white pumps and carry a white handbag to the homecoming dance.

Now, this here is a ridiculous silver dress that Tria Aguinaldo would probably want.  It’s floor-length, a little formal for homecoming, but the flower-design details are very Tria-like.  Embellishments = fun for that child.

I thought this dress was pretty cool, too.  It’s a tiered olive-green number with embellishments and black tulle.  A definite Armsdealer (Sofie) dress.  The model even looks like she has an attitude problem like Sofie’s!

Here is a ridiculously ruffly pink strapless homecoming gown.  Another floor-length one – it looks like the illegitimate love-child of Zoe’s purple dress and Maria’s red dress.  (How can dresses have illegitimate love-children?)  This dress goes with Amanda, who would adore it.

And finally, what you’ve all been waiting for…

Vera’s golden dress.  This one isn’t as puffy as the others, and not as classy as her prom dress, but it’s very pretty, very shiny, and would probably be something Tria and Sofie would force her into on Homecoming evening.

I hope you enjoyed this post.  To male readers: I’m sorry.

The TECH Project: The Prom

9 08 2008

Maybe you don’t want to know.  But I think that you do.

The other day, my sister had this huge revelation as we were cleaning out our closet.  “Oh my gosh, Feliza!  This would be a great dress for Desiree to wear at one of your photo shoots!”  (As you may recall, Desiree is the model that portrays Sofie Beretta.)
